![]() ![]() In Cyberpunk 2077, Night City is divided into six districts. Having that solid base in place, we could then begin to build our version of Night City of the year 2077. We were also fortunate enough to work with Mike directly, which was a great help to make sure we were on the right track. We scoured every map and read all the books and manuals as we tried to get into the mindset Mike Pondsmith had while creating Cyberpunk 2020. In this case, we began with the source material, which for us was Cyberpunk 2020. Kacper: Our work always starts with story and lore. How did the team approach this creative challenge? Q: Keeping true to the essence of its source material, we imagine the world of CYBERPUNK 2077, and Night City, in particular, had to resemble the real world yet look nothing like it in every respect. Michał pushes for environment-based storytelling, ensuring the compositions lead to interesting and beautiful paths for players to follow. He currently leads the Warsaw-based Environment Art team to bring the dystopian world of the dark future to life, ensuring that the artistic vision of the game is upheld both in the open world and in the quest locations. Working at CD PROJEKT RED since 2013, Michał helped build the world of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and its two expansions before working on Cyberpunk 2077. Michał Janiszewski - Lead Environment Artist, CD PROJEKT RED Before joining CD PROJEKT RED, he collaborated with The Farm 51 on projects such as Painkiller HD, Deadfall Adventures, and Get Even. He also leads a team of environment artists. Following this, he began to work on Cyberpunk 2077, beginning with the earliest designs and block-outs for Night City and the Badlands. We asked them how they took on the challenge of articulating Mike Pondsmith’s uncompromising vision of the dark future while ensuring that players were as immersed as possible in the world and its many stories. We caught up with Kacper Niepokólczycki and Michał Janiszewski, environment art leads at CD PROJEKT RED, who worked with their teams to bring to life the rich lore of the franchise in tandem with creating an engaging experience for players. The game promises many unforgettable characters - and to us - the design and art direction of Night City’s environments stand apart as a character all their own. Cyberpunk 2077 offers unprecedented verticality, exploration, and a deep array of player choices. CD PROJEKT RED gives us a sprawling, intricate world with Night City and the Badlands in this deep role-playing experience based on the work of Mike Pondsmith. Although the NCPD don't spend much time patrolling this area, its pretty well-behaved its well known that members of the Brawlers deal out street justice to those violating the local code of conduct (as posted around the block by the Brawlers).ĭuring the 2020s, bands which made regular appearances included Armed Havoc, Blood and Ice, and the Destructors.Cyberpunk 2077 - the most anticipated game of the year - is finally here. Finally, in a mass battle with single representatives from each gang inside the Slammers Arena, it was decided that the Back Alley Brawlers, a guardian vigilante gang, would control the block. Although the club doesn't open until 4:00PM, workers arrive here every morning at 9:00AM to reassemble the furniture.ĭue to the extremely territorial nature of Chromers, many fights have started over who has the right to control the area surrounding Metalstrom. The Chromers naturally credit their brawny physiques. ![]() The chair and tables fall apart when over-stressed, which makes brawls inside Metalstrom look like a Hollywood western. Although the reputation of the bar precedes itself, many still come to fight, drink and dance.Īfter much experimentation (and financial outlay) the owner of the club (a canny corporate who hates music) decided to purchased "breakaway" furniture. Most of the juves who attend this club are armed, as the chromers enjoy their violence almost as much as their music. ![]() Bars and mirrors are polished steel (dented with abuse), and chairs and tables are made of resilient plastic. Fortunately, most of the patrons are too brain-dead to notice, so the place is a success. It was designed in an attempt to blend the best of both rock bar and concert hall, and the resulting ambiance is quite unsettling. Metalstrom is a large club catering to the hardest (and loudest) of Chromatic rock tastes. It is situated in Night City's Upper Eastside section of Central Night City. Metalstrom (or MetalStorm) is a club featured in the pen and paper RPG Cyberpunk 2020. ![]()
